Air Compressor Cleaning & Maintenance Tips

Regular compressor maintenance can significantly improve the performance and longevity of your equipment. A clean compressor not only runs more efficiently, but also, it can help identify potential issues before they become major problems. By doing the following, you can keep your compressor running smoothly and avoid costly breakdowns.

Check for Air Leaks

Did you know that a small, ¼-inch air leak can cost you $2,500 to $8,000 a year in energy costs? Think about that amount multiplied by the number of leaks in your facility. Be sure to check hoses, tubes, air tools, and valves for fluid leaks as well. JBS also offers air audits for your system. Contact us today for assistance in optimizing your system and reducing energy costs.

Oil Sampling

Oil is the lifeblood of your compressor (unless it is an oil-free machine, of course). An oil sample can both indicate if your oil needs replacing, and also give direct insight into the inner workings of your machine. While checking to see if you need an oil change, look for any contaminants that may indicate larger issues. JBS can provide free oil sample bottles, pre-labeled with address info for the lab. JBS keeps all grades of compressor oil in stock for your convenience.

Monitor Energy Consumption & Temperature

Check the real-time incoming voltage to your air compressor. If the voltage is improper for the rating of your machine, it can cause major issues later on. Also, check for blocked vents in your compressor room or clogged heat exchangers on the machine, both of which can cause the compressor to overheat. Finally, look for varnish build-up, oil leaks, moisture pooling, and high vibration levels.

Clean Your Compressor

Don’t overlook the most important part of actual CLEANING! A thorough cleaning of your compressor is vital in maximizing the life of your equipment. Hands-on cleaning often leads to identifying the issues listed above. On top of cleaning any dust, oil, and debris from internal components, be sure to clean the surrounding area as well. Good housekeeping improves safety, creates a presentable environment and makes it easer to work in your mechanical room.
