Whites Creek Pumping Station

In 2012, Garney Construction began a $20 million Clean Water Nashville project to upgrade Whites Creek Pumping Station to 50 MGD capacity and make other improvements. John Bouchard & Sons Co. was selected as the mechanical, plumbing and electrical contractor to complete the electrical ($1.2 million) and HVAC & plumbing ($450,000) systems. JBS installed the new electrical system which uses about 30% less pumping energy compared to the old station. This includes a 4000 amp switchgear, a 2 megawatt generator with SCADA system, MCCs, VFDs and the rest of the electrical requirements for the station. The mechanical scope included several HVAC units, an air purification unit, FRP ductwork, custom stainless steel supports, heaters, aluminum ductwork, plumbing fixtures, and piping.

Brown and Caldwell (who won industry awards for their design) specified some unique layouts, including a complex slab. Correcting our initial mistake in misreading the electrical blueprints, JBS covered $20-$30K in updates to ensure that the final systems were installed and functioning correctly. Garney was pleased with the collaboration and work to the extent that, in 2017, Bouchard was their first call to request a bid for their next big job in town. That’s our goal – no matter the obstacles, the customer receives such a satisfactory product and experience that they want to invite us back for the next job.

Clean Water Nashville reports that “since its November 2013 completion, WCPS has been operating successfully and has not experienced a sanitary sewer overflow even with exceptionally high flows. ‘A new and improved pumping station is now online bringing one of Nashville’s most chronic sanitary sewer overflows into compliance,’ said MWS Director Scott Potter. ‘This is big news for the residents of this area, and we are excited about the (water quality) advisory being removed.”
